Once you can do that you will soon be able to draw what you see.  Thousands of people who never thought they could draw have learned after studying these techniques.  I taught myself from this book twenty years ago.  There is beauty and creative possibility in learning a new way to look at things and great satisfaction in successfully rendering the world around you.  We will conclude the class with two sessions of portrait drawing.

Poets have a wide array of tools at their disposal to make their poems rich and complex. This workshop aims to sharpen the most essential of these poetic devices. We will focus on the use of metaphor, simile, allusion, imagery, narrative, point-of-view and musicality. Examples of these poetic devices will be drawn from reading and listening to a variety of contemporary poets. The first part of the course will focus on the composition of the written word, and the second part of the course will concentrate on the taking the written word off the page and turning it into spoken word. The majority of each class will be spent critiquing attendee’s work, and honing their reading technique.

This class will introduce you to the ancient art of belly dance!  Every body shape, size, age, men, and women are welcome!  Belly dance is a low to no-impact form of exercise.  It helps strengthen your body’s core (abs and back muscles) and posture as you discover your sense of rhythm (even if you think you don’t have any), and helps give you a feeling of joy.  The class will cover the basic moves of belly dance.  Fast moves include shimmies and hip bumps.  Slow moves include hip circles and arm movements.  Each class will have a warm-up and cool-down period.  Plus students will be introduced to Middle Eastern music and the concepts of keeping time and following a song’s rhythm and melody.  Students who have already taken a class will be given harder moves to work on.

This class meets at the John Waldron Arts Center’s Rose Firebay Theater.

Materials: Wear comfortable clothing that you can stretch and move in.  Example: jeans would be too tight but stretch pants or shorts would be fine.  Skirts are also good as long as they are not tight fitting.  A scarf around your hips is also good especially if it has fringe.
