Mourning Lori

Location: Rose Firebay
Tickets: $12 adult; $10 senior/student/child

The Abrams family gathers for the funeral of their mother, Lori.  For middle son, David, it’s particularly bad timing.  He’s recovering from a nervous breakdown after an unpleasant divorce from a Hollywood actress, and the prospect of being strong for his grieving father and sisters is difficult. Even more difficult is David’s realization that he alone can still see, hear, and talk to his mother.  Unsure if he is psychic or just psychotic, David must find the courage to prepare for the hardest day of his life. Mourning Lori is an honest and heartfelt examination of love and loss, and the laughter that’s needed to keep tears at bay.

A world premiere, written and directed by Herald-Times theatre columnist Joel Pierson.

Produced by Mind's Ear Audio Productions

Vanderslice
Friday, October 5 @
8:30pm
John Vanderslice Concert
Location: Auditorium
Tickets: $8 general; $5 IU student

John Vanderslice wrote the bulk of his new album while knee-deep in legal limbo after a visa application for his girlfriend, a French national he met in Paris, was rejected by US Immigration.

The songs and themes in emerald city are fueled by an era of deep insecurity and paranoia; they develop in front of a backdrop of ritualized and mythologized current events. Lyrically, JV's characters and storytellers track Manifest Destiny from burning wagon wheels to two-bedroom homes with full amenities in Bakersfield, California. Along that rough road, there are bewildered commemorations, peace-lovers and revenge-lusters, psychotic reactions to unnamed episodes, and the grief-stricken and the vengeance-hungry wrapped up in the same skin. Weaving throughout the entire album is the ever present danger of opposition.

Jason Fickel
Location: Rose Firebay

Jason Fickel was born in Kansas and raised in western Colorado.  Bitten by the blues as a teenager, he headed South to Mississippi where he apprenticed with bluesmen James “Son” Thomas and Othar Turner, learning blues guitar and the blues trade from the masters, traveling with them to performances throughout the South.  Within two years, he was playing professionally, opening shows for the subdudes and John Hammond. Next Fickel headed north, first to Rhode Island, where he played coffeehouses and biker bars, and then on to Chicago, where he honed his songwriting craft.

Now based in Indiana, Fickel continues to tour, write, and record original music.
His most recent album, Kerosene Cologne, crackles with wry vocals, bottleneck guitars, and gumbo trombones—where Lightnin’ Hopkins meets Randy Newman

In response to requests from artists, the BAAC offers a free supportive networking group, Artists After Hours, held monthly at the John Waldron Arts Center.  Community artists of all disciplines are invited to regularly engage in lively discussion.  The program is modeled after the Chamber's successful after hours events, and features invited speakers to address different topics of interest.

Designed specifically for artists to communicate, Artists After Hours provides the structure of a monthly forum, encouraging unity through an open exchange of knowledge, resources and personal experience.  It is scheduled for the fourth Tuesday of each month at 5:15 pm.
